Westminster-based hardware store firm W.E. Aubuchon Co. will soon have its first presence in the Ocean State, following the acquisition of an Ace Hardware store in the village of Wyoming, Rhode Island.

The acquisition sees Wyoming Ace Hardware purchased by Aubuchon, with plans to move the store’s location to a former Walgreens pharmacy site in Richmond, Rhode Island, according to a press release issued by Aubuchon on Thursday. With the acquisition, Aubuchon will now operate 131 stores across 11 states, including every state in New England.

Wyoming Ace Hardware first opened in 2003. The purchase of the store comes as its owners, Rick and Linda Osborne, head into retirement. The store will be rebranded as Aubuchon Ace Hardware. Both Wyoming and Richmond are in southern Rhode Island, about a 40-minute drive from Providence.

“Rick built Wyoming Ace Hardware with heart, purpose, and a deep connection to the community,” William Aubuchon IV, president & CEO of Aubuchon, said in the press release. “For more than 22 years, he’s created more than just a store, he’s built a trusted place where neighbors come together. We’re honored to carry that spirit forward as we open our first store in Rhode Island and reimagine it in a new location in Richmond.”

Aubuchon is now in its fourth generation of family ownership, having been founded by William Aubuchon Sr. in 1908.

Aubuchon is the oldest family-owned hardware chain in the United States, according to its website, and the largest family-owned company in Central Massachusetts, with 1,500 local employees, according to information provided to the WBJ Research Department.

The company has 11 locations in Central Massachusetts, with stores in Ayer, Clinton, Franklin, Fitchburg, Gardner, Littleton, Lunenburg, Southbridge, Stow, Sudbury, and Webster.

Eric Casey is the managing editor at Worcester Business Journal, who primarily covers the manufacturing and real estate industries.
