The Worcester Red Sox are partnering with Canal District and Green Island businesses to encourage fans to patronize businesses in the neighborhood by offering discounts and reward points. Meanwhile, on Thursday the team will unveil an augmented reality game for fans to play during games.

“The Canal District is a thriving part of Worcester’s resurgence,” Jordan Sealey-Ashford, the WooSox’ coordinator of marketing & WooSox Rewards, said in a Monday press release from the team. “Our new collaboration rewards fans for visiting restaurants, shops, and other businesses in the Canal District, and rewards our neighbors by helping to ensure they benefit from the increasing vibrancy downtown.”

Fans who sign up for the WooSox Rewards program can get deals or loyalty points at a list of businesses, which currently includes 15 local stores, bars, and restaurants. Loyalty points can be redeemed at the park for concessions and gift shop items.

Businesses currently participating are:

  • Bedlam Book Café: 10% off rotating monthly smoothie specials and 15% off baseball books
  • BirchTree Bread Co.: Loyalty points for bringing receipts to the WooSox Rewards headquarters
  • Boland’s Bar and Patio: An exclusive WooSox Rewards menu
  • Bri’s Sweet Treats: 5% off any item and spend $50+ to receive a free Bri’s Sweet Treats tee

“We have enjoyed building relationships with our neighbors in the Canal District, and we continue to seek ways to help make sure they prosper from the crowds that come to Polar Park,” WooSox President Charles Steinberg said in the press release. “Retail establishments crave the arrival of more than a half million customers; we try to work with each business to see how we can best help them.”

The WooSox are also partnering with Workers Credit Union of Littleton and LinkToVR, a Boston-based augmented and virtual-reality company, to create Workers Reality, an augmented reality game where fans unlock baseball-themed AR content, with the ability to win prizes ranging from a poster to a WooSox prize pack with four season tickets for the 2024 season, attending batting practice with the players, and customized team jerseys.

The AR game will be unveiled in a press event on Thursday and debut at the Friday home game against the Rochester Red Wings.

It's the Green Island Canal District no matter how much the very few people want to believe otherwise.
Worst name brand marketing effort ever in trying to erase the city's history.
