Worcester among most overlooked travel destinations

The Worcester Art Museum was named among the attributes that make Worcester worth visiting.

Worcester can be an afterthought for travelers looking instead to Boston, or maybe Cape Cod or the Berkshires.

But travel guide publisher DK Eyewitness Travel has called Worcester the 11th most overlooked -- or, in other words, underrated -- destination city in the United States.

"Once firmly in Boston’s shadow, Massachusetts’ second-largest city is fast developing as a creative hub in its own right," the guide says. "The phenomenal collection at the Worcester Art Museum, as well as contemporary galleries and arts programs such as ARTSWorcester, Worcester Windows, and the Worcester PopUp, contrast with historic attractions such as the elegant Salisbury Mansion, built in 1772."

"Foodies won’t be disappointed either; the city pioneered the classic dining car, with Miss Worcester Diner open since 1948, and the current craft-beer scene championed by Wormtown Brewery," it adds, next to a photo of the Worcester Art Museum.

DK Eyewitness Travel said it looked beyond the well-known destinations to find those still under-the-radar.

Topping the list is Madison, Wisc., the state capital and home to the University of Wisconsin. That's followed by Sacramento, Calif.; Athens, Ga.; Rochester, N.Y.; Tucson, Ariz.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Santa Cruz, Calif.; Harrisburg, Pa.; Galveston, Texas; and Las Cruces, N.M.
