The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with presenting sponsor Fallon Health, the City of Worcester and Discover Central Massachusetts, announced on Wednesday they will once again cancel Independence Day fireworks because of the coronavirus pandemic.

As an alternative option, the Worcester Red Sox plan to host fireworks during their July 4th weekend homestand on Friday, Saturday and Sunday around the holiday, which falls on a Sunday.

“While we are approaching the light at the end of the tunnel with this pandemic, we aren’t quite there yet,” said City Manager Edward Augustus Jr., in a statement. “I appreciate the difficult decision made by the chamber and its partners, and I am optimistic that we will all come together again next year for a fireworks celebration to remember.”

This is the second year in a row that fireworks were canceled because of the pandemic. The groups said they expect the event to return in 2022.
