The Massachusetts Port Authority will begin the second phase of a $12.5-million rehabilitation project on one of Worcester Regional Airport’s two runways on August 21, with work expected to be complete in early November.

During construction, the runway will be closed Monday through Saturday between the hours of 7 p.m. to 11 a.m. and is expected to reopen each day, according to a Tuesday press release from Massport.

Runway 11-29 is the main runway at the airport and the only one available during low visibility conditions. Massport will replace pavement and runway lights as well as install pavement sensors and temperature probes, to more accurately monitor runway conditions.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Massport was able to accelerate the timeline of that construction, saving $300,000.
