Worcester State University has raised nearly $17 million for support of scholarships, academic programs and capital projects, the college announced over the weekend.

According to the university, more than 7,000 donors contributed $16.9 million to the five-year donation campaign, which is the third largest in the school’s history and dubbed "Change Lives Campaign."

The Worcester State Foundation, which seeks to raise money for the school beyond its state funding, has seen its endowment grow from $15 million to $26 million over the course of the campaign while providing more than $1 million each year to the school.

In addition, funds to support scholarships, research grants and student awards grew by 50 percent, the school announced.

Over the campaign, 62 new scholarship funds were created and $1.8 million has been generated for those awards, the university said.
