Site work is underway on a three-story self-storage facility on James Street in South Worcester.

The 500-plus-unit facility, called Lucky Pick Self Storage, will rise on the former site of Gatto's Greenhouses & Flower Shop. The site at 29-49 James St. is also permitted for retail or office space totaling around 6,000 square feet in an adjacent building.

Construction of the 71,000-square-foot storage building is slated to start in April and be completed by April, according to Galaxy Development of Auburn, the owner and developer of the property. Pre-leasing of the building is set to start late this summer.

Galaxy Development bought the roughly two-acre property in 2018 for $683,000. Galaxy also developed the Trolley Yard on Park Avenue in Worcester.
