Worcester Polytechnic Institute has joined BioConnects New England, a regional coalition to support biotechnology hubs throughout New England.

The group plans to expand biomanufacturing infrastructure to underserved regions across Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island, , according to a Thursday press release from the college. It will focus on building career pathways through workforce development and educational programs.

BioConnects New England is working on a project funded by a $500,000 Phase I Build Back Better Regional Challenge from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, which is meant to boost economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The group’s four main projects include workforce training and education pipelines, prototyping for biopharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory incubator building, and equity initiatives for women and marginalized populations.
