Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester has received $4.9 million in grants from the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Defense to support scholarship programs for undergraduate and graduate students who commit to cybersecurity-related government service after graduation, the school announced on Tuesday.

"Federal agencies need security experts and these scholarship programs are an excellent way to attract student attention and interest," said Craig Shue, computer science associate professor and the director of the WPI Scholarships for Service program, in a statement.

The NSF portion of the funding will go toward supporting the CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service Program, which supports 25 students over five years. That program provides full tuition, a stipend, academic fees and a book allowance. Students commit to one year of government service for each year of scholarship, up to three years.

WPI has offered the program since 2015, according to a press release.

DoD funding will go toward the Cyber Scholarship Program. Eligible students must apply directly with the DoD with a school’s recommendation. Those who are selected will be guaranteed a job within a DoD agency after graduation, according to a press release.

WPI is able to offer that scholarship opportunity to its program because it was designated a National Center for Excellence in 2014, and again in 2019.
