Worcester Polytechnic Institute researcher Amity Manning received a $1.1-million grant for a five-year research project on cell division.

The award came from the Virginia-based National Science Foundation, which has also funded WPI research in manufacturing drying technology and cyber defense over the last year, according to a Tuesday press release from the college.

Manning’s project will focus on understanding cell division, which is a fundamental process in organisms’ growth and development. The project builds on Manning’s previous research on the regulation of cell division.

“We know that there can be defects in the cell division process, and that those defects lead to cells that are genetically different from the parent cell,” Manning said in a statement. “Genetically different cells are a factor in cancer, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and miscarriages. A greater understanding of the basic science of mitosis could have implications for any disease that involves cell proliferation.”

Manning was awarded nearly $800,000 for her study of cancer cell division in July.
