Firm Drops Pursuit Of Slots In Littleton

Less than two weeks after an announcement that Toronto-based Clairvest Group was considering a Littleton development for a slots parlor, the company said it's decided to look elsewhere.

In a statement released Wednesday, Clairvest said it is "continuing to evaluate opportunities for a gaming license application in the commonwealth of Massachusetts." However, at this time, "has decided not to proceed with a project in Littleton."

"As we continue to evaluate opportunities in Massachusetts, Clairvest remains committed to a transparent process that meets the needs of all stakeholders," the statement said.

The firm had been considering building a facility within The Point, a 90-acre mixed-use development near the junction of Route 119 and Interstate 495. Ground was broken on the $60-million project in August.

In its initial statement, posted on the Town of Littleton's website, Clairvest said The Point "has the potential to be the ideal location" for a slots parlor. Although the company had met with the state's Gaming Commission, it never submitted a formal proposal to the state or town.

As part of the expanded gaming legislation signed by Gov. Deval Patrick just over a year ago, licenses for up to three, resort-style casinos will be awarded in the commonwealth, in addition to one slots parlor license.

Weeks before word of a possible Clairvest deal in Littleton, published reports indicated that Cambridge-based developer Richard Friedman was interested in a mostly-abandoned site just outside Kelley Square in Worcester. However, as of Wednesday, Gaming Commission spokeswoman Elaine Driscoll said the only application and $400,000 deposit for a slots parlor the state had yet received was from the Plainridge Racecourse in Plainville. Applications and deposits are due Jan. 15.
