Pending Mass. Home Sales Up Again

The number of single-family homes and condominiums put under sales agreement in Massachusetts rose for the 12th consecutive month in April compared with the same stretch that ended in April 2011, the Massachusetts Association of Realtors (MAR) said.

Homes under agreement for sale are a leading indicator of actual housing sales for the following two to three months, the MAR said.

The number of single-family homes put under agreement last month – 4,784 - was up 35.6 percent compared with April 2011. Agreements were up 5.9 percent over the previous month.

Meanwhile, the number of condominiums put under agreement in April rose 30.9 percent year over year, with 1,878 units committed to sell. That number is 1.3 percent higher from March.

The last time agreements were at those levels was in 2010, aided by a federal tax incentive to boost sales, according to MAR President Trisha McCarthy, who said buyers today are feeling more confident about the economy.
