The state's housing market continued its upward momentum in August as the number of single-family homes and condominiums placed under agreement – or pending sales - rose for the 16th straight month, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.
The group said the number of single-family homes put under agreement rose nearly 28 percent over August 2011, to 4,717, the best August on record since the association began tracking pending sales. Meanwhile, the number of condominiums put under agreement in August was up nearly 31 percent over the same month last year, at 1,761 units.
The pending sales numbers are a leading indicator of actual housing sales in Massachusetts for the next two to three months, the association said. "This bodes well for strong closed-sales results in the fall and early winter," said Trisha McCarthy, association president.
