10 Things I Know About ... Tapping
 Hidden Talent

Lewis

10. KNOW WHAT IT IS

A hidden talent, also known as a natural talent, is something that’s second nature; for example, the employee who enjoys being president of a local charity, while his or her daily job falls short of reflecting his or her leadership qualities.

9. KNOW WHAT EMPLOYEES CAN DO
These talents, or skills, need to be recognized and incorporated into an employee's job to enhance productivity and satisfaction.

8. DON'T IGNORE SIGNALS

Be observant. Take note of an employee whose foot is tapping constantly. Understand he or she may be one of your most valuable assets, and call on them to get things moving.

7. APPRECIATE

If employees don’t feel appreciated for their good work and ideas, they start to disengage and then leave, perhaps for your competition.

6. ACT, DON’T STONEWALL

If employees are doing a good job suggesting new ways for things to work more smoothly and are willing to help the business move out of its outdated comfort zone, don't dismiss their ideas too quickly.

5. FOLLOW UP

Don't let an employee's suggestions and desire to use their hidden talents get lost in the hierarchy. That breeds frustration.

4. RECOGNIZE PERSONALITY STYLES

Employees express themselves in unique ways. At meetings, note employees’ communication styles and how they interact with colleagues.

3. ENGAGE

Learn what makes your employees tick and what they’re passionate about outside the workplace. Talk with each privately, at least once a month, and ask how things are going for them inside and outside work.

2. EMPLOYEES: BE VISIBLE …
Are you keeping a low profile just to hang onto your job? Increase your visibility by ramping up your role. The more helpful you are, the better.

1. … AND GO THE EXTRA MILE

Step up to the plate and add innovative ideas. Don't hesitate to reveal some of your hidden talents that can make your job more interesting and help the company.
