101: TAKING A HEADSHOT

Whether it's for your company website, or to put on your business card or LinkedIn page, a corporate headshot is a great way for potential new clients or collaborators to get to know you. Has it been a few years since yours has been updated?

Here are three tips to keep in mind before the photographer says “Cheese!”

Be busy at work, not in your headshot. Steer clear of stripes or distracting prints when choosing what to wear. The same goes for novelty ties, elaborate necklaces, or other accessories that might distract from your face. Anything you can do to keep your headshot classic and timeless is helpful, says an article at DaltonPhoto.com, such as the colors you wear: “While soft pastel colors are great at a spring business meeting or courtroom appearance, your business portrait will be seen year around, so avoid seasonal colors.”

No turtlenecks. “They crowd the face,” points out an article at Headshot-Photos.com. Opt instead for clothes that make you look great, are new or like new, fit you well (or it will be obvious in the photos), and are pressed.

Timing is everything. Though school of thought has traditionally been that morning photo sessions are best, there's no hard-and-fast rule here. “Some people prefer early in the day so they can avoid the stresses of the day that may show later on their faces,” points out an article at TimelessEdge.com. “Others prefer later in the day after they have settled in and had a coffee.” Find a time of day you think you look your best and allow at least 15 minutes for the session.
