2010 Family Business Awards

As the old saying goes, no one’s epitaph will ever read, “I wish I spent more time at the office.”

And although it may sound cliché, the truth is, family is a central part to human relationships and familial connections are what oftentimes help us all get through the hard times.

So, it’s no wonder that family businesses continue to survive and thrive even in today’s ever-changing economy. There is something inherently decent about family members — parents, siblings, cousins — coming together to help build and sustain a business.

Ties That Bind

Within this special supplement to the Worcester Business Journal, you’ll find profiles of six outstanding businesses that we’ve selected as the 2010 Central Mass. Family Business Award winners. This group joins last year’s inaugural class of elite firms who have translated family ties into business acumen.

The honorees vary in scope and industry. On one end of the spectrum we have the small, Sutton-based Vaillancourt Folk Art. Two generations — parents and son — now run the business. On the other end, is Westborough-based Salmon Health and Retirement, which has more than more than 900 full-time employees including members of the third generation of Salmons.

With today’s headlines filled with news of corporate missteps and fat-cat bonuses, it’s refreshing to hear stories like those of the family businesses we’ve selected to honor. There are no multi-million dollar bonuses for these folks. Instead, there’s a tremendous amount of hard work, perseverance and commitment. There are also a host of tough calls, difficult decisions and sleepless nights. But read any one of the profiles and you’ll understand that for these firms, the rewards always outweigh the demands.

A special thank you to the writers who helped produce this special edition — Livia Gershon, Sarah Rolph and Ellen O’Connor. Also, a special thank you to our freelance photographer Edd Cote who took the stunning images you’ll find throughout this publication. And a final note of gratitude to our judges, who had the unenviable task of winnowing down the field of nominees.

We hope you enjoy the profiles of these award-winning family businesses.  — Christina H. Davis WBJ Editor
