10 Things I Know About ... Being Creative

Maguy

10. IT'S FLEETING.

We must capture our genius ideas when they happen. I have various notepads and devices strategically hidden all over my house for such occasions. In a pinch, use the recording app on your phone.

9. WHEN IN DOUBT, GET OUT.

Sometimes you can crush through a creative block by changing your surroundings. I can be completely stumped on something for a day, and the idea finally comes to me on the

ride home.

8. TIME IS IRRELEVANT.

Good ideas won't just appear between

9 and 5. Open up your time, renegotiate your hours, do what you must. If you love what you do, you won't be able to avoid shutting off your mind.

7. SOMETIMES IT TAKES A VILLAGE.

A lot of us want to keep our ideas to ourselves. But when there's something you can't crack or a deadline looms, call in backup. Sometimes all it takes is a conversation with the client, a relative

or your pet ferret.

6. CONCRETE DEADLINES CAN INSPIRE.

Sometimes we procrastinate because we're afraid to start, or we overanalyze

to death. Instead of saying "I'll get back to you with specifics," sometimes it makes more sense to break a project

into specific milestones.

5. IT CAN COME SLOWLY.

Instead of agonizing over what you can't get done, focus on the things you can do. Just let it go for a while and do something else.

4. DON'T IGNORE WHAT'S BEEN DONE.

Just because an idea came to you from somewhere else doesn't mean it's bad.

In fact, sometimes in advertising, an

idea that feels familiar can do wonders.

3. BE CONFIDENT.

You're in this business because you pass muster. If you don't believe in yourself, how can anyone else?

2. FACE THE CROWD.

When you're poring over analytics, data and other number-y things, stop and think about what it means to the person you're trying to talk to.

1. TRUST YOUR GUT.

If it feels wrong or if you find yourself doubting the project, speak up. What we do takes a lot of gut instinct. Your creative sensibility and intuition will get you far if you listen to it.
