2013 40 Under Forty: Tiffany A. Moore Simas

Moore Simas

TITLES:  Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics
Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology Research Division

Associate Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program
Co-Investigator, National Children’s Study

University of Massachusetts Medical School and UMass Memorial Health Care

LOCATION: Worcester

RESIDENCE: Whitinsville

FAVORITE MOVIE: “Pride and Prejudice”

FAVORITE BOOK: Books I frequently recommend to others include “Cutting for Stone,” “Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and “Half the Sky.”

Career highlights: I am founding director of the medical school’s Department of Ob/Gyn Research Division. This role has afforded me opportunities to advance my own research interests, to foster collaborations with other investigators and to participate in national initiatives, like the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network. Studies I have conducted or in which I have participated have contributed to the areas of preeclampsia prediction and non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. As much as I love one-on-one patient care, I am blessed to be able to educate medical trainees and to perform research; my roles as residency associate director and research director allow me to educate future women’s health providers and potentially even to inform care with an evidence-based approach and advance women’s health on a broader scale.

Community involvement: For most of the past 10 years I have been a volunteer on the Worcester Healthy Baby Collaborative, formerly the Worcester Infant Mortality Reduction Task Force. I have had the humbling honor of providing women’s health care internationally, of participating in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts, and of partaking in maternal mortality human rights investigations. I have seen first-hand the plight of women in Ghana, Kenya, Indonesia, Peru and Haiti.

Biggest success: As a professional woman, I have been made to question the cultural appropriateness of mentioning my children, never mind saying that they are my biggest successes. But the truth is, they are. I have yet to experience anything as rewarding as my 6-year-old Jack and my 21-month-old Lily knocking me over with running hugs and smiles.  My husband and my children give me perspective and purpose.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge is focus, or saying no. I love and am intrigued by almost everything. I like to help and to be involved.

Mentors: I have been blessed by the wisdom and support of a large and greatly appreciated mentorship team, including my parents, husband and in-laws, my high school science teacher Pauline Allaire-Adams and current colleagues and collaborators (Doctors Meyer, Felice, Ockene, Johnson, Crawford, Rosal and Corvera).

Hidden talents: Fun hidden talents include event planning, organizing and home decorating — these are mostly exercised on family and friends and in my own closets and home. Other fun talents include baking, dancing, amateur piano playing and a love of musicals.
