2013 Forty Under 40: Richard Hayward Jr.

Hayward

Title: Senior Vice President, CFO and Treasurer, Clinton Savings Bank

Company location: Clinton

Residence: Bellingham

Favorite movie: “Good Will Hunting”

Favorite book: “You’ll See It When You Believe It” by Dr. Wayne Dyer

Career highlights: There are many experiences during my career that could be highlighted, and being named to the Worcester Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 is definitely near the top of the list. Earning the title of vice president of finance at age 26 would also be near the top. It was truly a humbling experience to achieve that milestone, especially after being in public practice as an audit supervisor before that. That accomplishment was only surpassed when Clinton Savings Bank selected me to become their new chief financial officer at age 33.

Community involvement: One of the benefits of my position at Clinton Savings Bank is that I also get to manage the Clinton Savings Charitable Foundation. It’s incredibly rewarding to become involved in the community, not only through monetary donations, but also by witnessing the effect of those contributions firsthand by visiting the different organizations we donate to and volunteering at the WHEAT Café. On a more personal level, I’ve spent several years coaching my children’s soccer teams.  That experience has allowed me to form a community connection that I would not trade for the world.

Biggest success: My family is my greatest success. I know there are many people who may cite professional accomplishments, but for me, family is the first thing that comes to mind.

Biggest challenge: My biggest challenge, like other CFOs, is navigating the current economic climate. Indicators show that things are improving — housing prices are up, employers are hiring again, and the financial markets are strong. As the individual charged with setting the fiscal policies of the bank, I have to “read the tea leaves” of those indicators, and make smart decisions to determine what actions CSB must take regarding rates and policies.

Mentors: Dr. Wayne Dyer, the author of “You’ll See It, When You Believe It,” and “Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life,” has been extremely influential in my life. While I have never met him, I have read many of his books and the message that resonates with me is that “we create our world by the thoughts we believe.” Another very influential person in my life is my mentor Bob Paulhus, president and CEO of Clinton Savings Bank. Since I joined CSB, he has become a significant role model to me and I am grateful for everything that I have learned from him.

Hidden talent: Very few people know that I can spin a basketball on my finger.
