P. Kevin Condron: Chairman and CEO, The Granite Group LLC, Concord, N.H.

Condron

P. Kevin Condron may have been born and raised outside the Bay State, but after joining and running his family's plumbing wholesale business, he began a long run as one of Worcester's key brokers of power and influence.

Condron has chaired three of the city's most powerful business and economic-development organizations: the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce; the Worcester Business Development Corp.; and in its Medical City land-taking heyday, the Worcester Redevelopment Authority. He had his hand firmly on the wheel of three major projects in the city's then-stagnant downtown: the DCU Center's convention facility, Union Station, and Worcester Medical Center.

Condron is also engaged well beyond the city of Worcester, as a director of The Hanover Insurance Group, TD Banknorth Inc., Catholic Charities, and board chair at the College of the Holy Cross, his alma mater.

In a 2012 interview with the Worcester Business Journal, Condron explained why he's been involved in so many Worcester organizations. “I've always felt that whatever you do, you want to do it better than anyone else ever did it. And when an opportunity comes along, you want to do it and do it better than anybody else did it.”

Condron's day job is chairman and CEO of the $160-million Granite Group LLC. He and his father-in-law purchased the company in 1971, when it was called Central Supply, based in Worcester, and is grossing roughly $2 million annually.

Today, The Granite Group, now based in Concord, N.H., is ranked as one of the top 50 plumbing and heating wholesale distributors in the U.S., with more than 400 employees in 26 locations throughout New England and Eastern New York state.
