Reorganized colleges group opens new Worcester office
The Higher Education Consortium of Central Massachusetts, the organization reconstructed from the Colleges of Worcester Consortium, will officially open its newly renovated office Wednesday, in a building that will reflect its name.
The new consortium, which goes by the acronym HECCMA, has set up shop at 11 Norwich St. on property owned and donated by MCPHS University, according to a statement from the organization. HECCMA also said the building will be renamed The HECCMA Building by City Manager Edward Augustus.
“In establishing HECCMA, the presidents of the region’s colleges and universities express their commitment to being directly involved in ensuring that higher education continues to flourish in the region in ways that are mutually beneficial to both our own institutions and the community,” Clark University President David P. Angel, who is also chair of HECCMA, said in a statement. “With the exciting developments underway in the city of Worcester, we judged it important for HECCMA to be located downtown.”
A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the office was scheduled for this afternoon.
Last year’s reorganization of the Colleges of Worcester Consortium (COWC), which reduced the consortium's staff from several members to just one executive director, resulted in HECCMA ending its involvement with youth education access programs it had managed for years. This allowed the consortium to focus solely on services for member schools, such as joint purchasing programs, cross-registration between member schools, and advocacy initiatives.
