Worcester nonprofits win Tufts Health Plan grants

The Tufts Health Plan Foundation has announced more than $1.6 million in new funding to 43 Massachusetts and Rhode Island-based organizations, including two from Worcester, as part of its first cycle of funding for 2014.

The largest number of grants this cycle was in the foundation’s Health & Wellness program area, primarily for initiatives that promote chronic disease self-management and prevention, exercise and nutrition, and fall prevention.

Locally, a $35,000 grant to Central Massachusetts Area Health Education Center, located at UMass Memorial Medical Center, will fund an initiative to improve the health and disease management capacity of older adults and their caregivers by bringing two new evidence-based programs to Massachusetts, according to Tufts Health Plan Foundation.

Additionally, the Foundation said VNA Care Network was awarded a grant of $14,000 that will fund Fewer Falls, Safer Seniors, a nurse-led, community-based fall prevention program aimed to increase knowledge and awareness of fall prevention and personal risk factors that lead to falls.
