Baker names labor secretary

Governor-elect Charlie Baker has filled another hole in his cabinet on Friday, naming Next Street founder and president Ron Walker as his secretary of labor and workforce development. Next Street is a merchant bank that helps small businesses and entrepreneurs start in urban areas and grow their businesses.

Walker, who has previously served as chair of the board of Roxbury Comprehensive Community Health Center and vice chair of the Crispus Attucks Children’s Center in Roxbury, is Baker's first minority appointment to a cabinet that so far includes three men and two women.

"Ron's experience will serve him well as he takes on the job of connecting our administration's job training and workforce development services with employers ensuring they expand and grow here," Baker said in a statement. "I look forward to Ron bringing the new, innovative approach he took in his role at Next Street to this important post and I am thrilled to have him onboard."

Before starting Next Street, Walker held the position of executive vice president and regional executive of retail banking for Sovereign Bank. He has also worked with Fleet Financial Group, Bank of New England, the Xerox Corporation and IBM.
