Agencies win grants to boost manufacturing careers

The North Central Massachusetts Development Corp. (NCMDC) said it received a $10,000 grant to conduct outreach and programs to entice young people into advanced manufacturing careers.

MassDevelopment issued the grant through a program called AMP it up.

The NCMDC received the money in partnership with Mount Wachusett Community College. The two organizations will design presentations on the use of technology in manufacturing for middle and high school students in North Central Massachusetts. Other programs will include summer tours of manufacturing facilities tied to an existing summer program focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Mount Wachusett will also host a Manufacturing Day event in October 2015 on its Devens campus.

The Central Massachusetts Workforce Investment Board (CMWIB) in Worcester was also a recipient in the latest round. The organization received $10,000 in partnership with the Worcester Public Schools, the Blackstone Valley Education Foundation, and Quinsigamond Community College. The program will target teachers, school counselors, college faculty, families, and parents who influence career decision making for students in grades 7 through 12, according to MassDevelopment.

“With such a wealth of opportunities in the advanced manufacturing industry here in Massachusetts and an ever-increasing need for skilled workers to fill these high-paying jobs, young people need to know more about the possibilities of manufacturing careers,” MassDevelopment CEO Marty Jones said in a statement.

According to MassDevelopment, the AMP it up campaign highlights technology-driven, high-paying career options in manufacturing and dispels misconceptions about the industry to bolster the prospective employee base for advanced manufacturing companies in the Bay State. In its third year, the program will provide $88,633 in grants to nine partnerships.
