Fitchburg company to provide YMCA with energy efficient lighting in EPA settlement

DRS Power Technology, Inc., which operates a machinery manufacturing facility at 166 Boulder Dr. in Fitchburg, will provide over $6,000 worth of energy-efficient lighting to the YMCA of Central Massachusetts as part of a violation settlement with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for allegedly violating air pollution control regulations, MassDEP announced Tuesday.

The company was reportedly found by the MassDEP in April, 2015 to have failed to obtain an Air Quality Plan Approval prior to installing equipment that could produce air emissions. The company subsequently agreed to comply with regulations as well as pay the penalty. All of the penalty will be used to purchase energy-efficient LED lighting for the YMCA of Central Massachusetts in Fitchburg, under MassDEP’s policy for Supplemental Environmental Projects, according to MassDEP.

“I am glad that DRS has taken this opportunity to help the YMCA improve their energy efficiency as a means to settle this matter,” John Kronopolus, deputy director for MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, said in a statement. “The company quickly applied for the necessary permit for the previously installed equipment.”

MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
