$87M Holy Cross Athletic Complex renovation moving to next phase

Holy Cross is preparing for the next phase of the renovation of the Hart Athletic Center with Saturday's dedication of the Luth Althletic Complex.

The renovation of the athletic complex and field house, which will cost approximately $87 million, is being funded in part by a $32.5 million donation from alumnus John E. Luth and his wife, Dr. Joanne Chouinard-Luth. The donation that was received last year was the largest in the school’s history. Luth is a 1974 graduate and founder, CEO and chairman of Seabury Group, a global advisory and investment company specializing in the aviation and aerospace industries.

The couple will be on hand for the dedication of the Luth Athletic Complex, which represents the new area of construction, where they will sign a beam that will be used as part of the final construction of the facility. The concrete foundation for the expansion has already been poured in preparation for the construction while demolition of the basketball court is underway as well, according to Holy Cross spokesperson Bridget Cass. The entire athletic facility will be called the Luth Athletic Complex, although the pre-existing athletic buildings will retain the Hart Athletic Center name.

The new athletic complex is one of the six main initiatives of the college's ongoing $400 million fundraising campaign "Become More: Campaign for the Future of Holy Cross."

The importance of the athletic complex is highlighted by the recent March Madness run of the Holy Cross Men’s Basketball team, according to a release from the school. In addition, one of every four Holy Cross students is a varsity athlete on one of their 27 Division I teams.

The ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Hart Center.
