Local manufacturers receive $1.3M in workforce development grants

Manufacturers in Central Massachusetts and the state’s manufacturing industry organization headquartered in Worcester received about $1.3 million in Workforce Training Grant funds from the state, the Baker-Polito Administration announced.

The Worcester-based Massachusetts Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MassMEP) received two grants; one for $141,253 to train 117 workers and create 30 new jobs at manufacturing companies in Western Massachusetts. MassMEP also received $223,200 from the fund to train 161 workers and create 44 new jobs by 2018 at manufacturers, including The L.S. Starrett Co. of Athol.

Outside of MassMEP, individual companies also received awards. The biggest grant went to Fitchburg injection molding manufacturer Mar-Lee Cos., Inc. for the training of 81 workers. Mar-Lee Companies, which received $176,000 expects to create eight new jobs by 2018, according to the state.

Here’s the comprehensive list of Central Massachusetts companies that received Workforce Training Grant funds.

  • MassMEP of Worcester: $223,200 to train 161 workers; 44 additional jobs expected by 2018. This applies to the following businesses: New England Natural Bakers of Greenfield, Decker Machine Works, Inc. of Ashfield, The L.S. Starrett Company of Athol, and Deerfield Packaging of Turners Falls.
  • Mar-Lee Companies, Inc. of Fitchburg: $176,000 to train 81 workers; eight additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • MassMEP of Worcester: $141,253 to train 117 workers; 30 additional jobs expected. This applies to the following businesses: Savage Arms, Inc. of Westfield, Belt Technologies of Agawam, Vaupell Molding & Tooling, Inc. of Agawam, Mestek, Inc. of Westfield, and Manufacturing Technology Group, Inc. of Westfield.
  • Associated Environmental Systems of Ayer: $167,020 to train 71 workers; five additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • PerkinElmer, Inc. of Hopkinton: $124,700 to train 105 workers.
  • Plansee USA, LLC of Franklin: $108,025 to train 121 workers; 3 additional jobs by 2018.
  • Vibram USA of North Brookfield: $106,710 to train 98 workers; seven additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • Dienes Corp. of Spencer: $64,260 to train 36 workers: five additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • Anderson Power Products of Sterling: $63,463 to train 76 workers; two additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • Automatic Specialties of Marlborough: $57,440 to train 22 workers; five additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • K&K Thermoforming, Inc. of Southbridge: $50,535 to train 25 workers; one additional job expected by 2018.
  • Interstate Specialty Products of Sutton: $35,800 to train 23 workers; three additional jobs expected by 2018.
  • Mach Machine, Inc. of Hudson: $26,655 to train 6 workers; one additional job expected by 2018.
