Dell to cut 2,000+ EMC jobs

The two companies will merged Sept. 7 with news of layoffs leaked days later.

Following the Dell Technologies purchase of EMC this week, between 2,000 and 3,000 jobs at the Hopkinton firm will be cut, according to a Bloomberg report relying on anonymous sources.

That report from Bloomberg Technology said reductions will be made later this year among mostly U.S. employees in areas including administration and marketing as the company looks to achieve cost savings of $1.7 billion in the first year and a half following the merger.

The staffing cuts would not be the first that have been made in connection with the acquisition. In January, the underlying concerns about layoffs reared their head with the announcement that EMC subsidiary VMware would lay off 800 employees, mostly in California. The company announced Jonathan Chadwick, VMware's chief operating officer and executive vice president, was leaving the company. In March, signs of an ongoing exodus from the company continued as the president of VMware stepped down to join California venture capital firm Sequoia Capital.
