MTD Micro Molding dedicated to medical

When MTD Micro Molding was founded in 1972 as Miniature Tool & Die, Inc., the company quickly established itself as a maker of miniature connector molds for the electronics industry. But today, the Charlton company is all about medical -- in fact, President Dennis Tully said they are the only company in the U.S. entirely dedicated to medical micro molding.

Tully spoke about operations, the company’s recent certification for its processes, and an upcoming expansion of its Charlton facility.

What do you make?

MTD produces micromolded components for medical OEMs. Eighty percent of the components we produce are implantable products, with 75 percent of those being bioabsorbable applications, or components that dissolve or absorb into the body, minimizing concerns about any adverse effects.

Micro medical devices produced by MTD Micro Molding support a variety of medical categories: orthopedic, drug delivery, interventional cardiology, biomed pharma, neuromodulation, bronchoscopy, oncology, urology, gynecology, endoscopy, ENT, peripheral medicine, diabetes care, gastrointestinal, and other areas to help improve life.

Where are your clients located?

The majority of MTD’s clients are based in North America, but we serve medical device companies all around the world.

What is the significance of the MedAccred certification you received?

This audit was developed by a group of highly regarded medical companies. Each of those companies brought forth their ideas about how a manufacturing company should operate to meet all of their critical criteria.

Through the recent MedAccred certification, we have proved our critical manufacturing processes for micro injection molding, including our unrivalled experience in bioabsorbable molding, are robust.

How do you stay ahead of the competition?

As a company, we work to our core values of “Be the First, Be the Best”. We stay ahead with in-house tooling, unparalleled bioabsorbable molding expertise, ISO 13485 certified systems, state of the art equipment – all under one roof. Our dedicated focus on bioabsorbable and drug delivery micro molding ensures successful delivery of complex custom products that few companies believe are even possible.

We accept the challenges that lead to the creation of new boundaries in micro molding science. When we share examples of cutting edge projects with a medical company’s engineering team, we plant the seeds for future growth. That helps solidify our position as leaders of this technology.

What's going on right now, and what are your future plans for the company?

A 12,000 sq. ft. addition to the existing building in Charlton is in the near future. This will allow us to convert the entire front of building to 100 percent cleanroom molding.
