Sales of expensive computers are spiking, says Framingham firm
Framingham digital market intelligence firm International Data Corp. says revenue from global sales of supercomputer systems priced at $500,000 or more increased 22 percent in the third quarter.
IDC said Wednesday international sales of these expensive computers totaled $985 million in the third quarter vs. $806 million in the third quarter 2015. IDC measures worldwide factory revenue, not necessarily retail sales of computers.
Revenue from slightly more reasonably priced computers between $250,000-$499,000 grew as well, IDC reported, increasing 22 percent in the third quarter as well.
Lower-priced systems did not fair as well, as revenue from computers priced between $100,000-$249,000 declined 14 percent while those priced below $100,000 declined 9 percent.
The biggest companies in this high-performance computer market are California-based Hewlett Packard Enterprise (36-percent market share), Texas-based Dell (19 percent) and North Carolina-based Lenovo (9 percent).
