Having met its corporate sponsorship and season ticket goals, the Worcester Railers Hockey Club has officially been approved as an ECHL team, clearing the way for the season to begin in October.

The hockey league’s board of governors voted on Jan. 18 to approve the Railers as one of its teams, holding the vote in Glen Falls, N.Y. during the league’s annual all-star game.

The ECHL announced the Worcester franchise on Feb. 8, but the team – owned by Beverly businessman Cliff Rucker – had to sell $350,000 in corporate sponsorships and 1,500 season tickets before being granted official ECHL status.

The Railers have not given exact counts on corporate sponsorships, but Rucker said in October his team would already rank 14th of the 28 ECHL franchises, based on sponsorships at that time. Rucker also said 780 season tickets had been sold.

The team is slated to have its first game Oct. 14 at the DCU Center in Worcester.
