Worcester has improved its position as a U.S. Best Place to Live, according to a ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

The digital news outlet this year put Worcester at No. 54 out of the top 100 largest U.S. metropolitan areas, according to a press release issued Tuesday.

New England’s second largest city with a metropolitan population of 900,000, Worcester moved up in the ranking from No. 65 last year.

U.S News called Worcester a vibrant and diverse community, and highlighted its affordability as well as recreational and cultural assets.

“Worcester provides an excellent cultural life, including amazing restaurants, concert and theatre venues and the Worcester Art Museum, which houses original works by Monet, Gauguin and Degas,” U.S. News said in its description of Worcester.

The Best Places to Live rankings are intended to help readers make informed decisions about where to settle down. Cities are ranked based on five indexes generated using federal government data. Those include job market; value; quality of life; desirability and net migration, a measure of how many people move to and from a city.

Meanwhile, Boston and Springfield improved their rankings this year as well, with Boston moving from No. 30 to No. 8 on the list, and Springfield moving from No. 74 to No. 67 .

Austin, Texas placed first this year, followed by Denver, then San Jose, Calif.; Washington, D.C., and Fayetteville, Ark.
