Immigrants have major impact in Mass., study shows

Immigrants have an outsized role in the Massachusetts economy, with the state's universities and colleges a major reason why, according to a new survey.

Per-capita economic contribution of international students the highest in the country, as was the percent of all jobs that are created by the presence of international students, the study released by California data firm WalletHub showed.

Overall, the Bay State ranked fourth nationally in terms of the the economic impact of immigrants, behind California, New Jersey and New York.

Connecticut ranked sixth, also on the strength of its international students. The other New England states were more spread out: Rhode Island 14th, New Hampshire 18th, Vermont 25th and Maine 37th.

The study looked at 18 metrics in all, including the median household income from foreign-born workers, and the percent of foreign-born workers with a bachelor's degree or higher.
