Mass. tech employment up 3% in 2016

The Massachusetts technology industry grew up more than 9,400 jobs, or an estimated 3.2 percent, last year, according to a new report Monday by CompTIA, a technology association based in Illinois.

The Bay State has the fifth-highest tech employment, with an estimated 300,000-plus workers, with an overwhelming majority of those in Greater Boston, the report said.

California has the most tech jobs, by far, with nearly 1.2 million. Only California, Florida, Texas and New York have more tech jobs than Massachusetts.

But Massachusetts has the highest percentage of workers in the tech field, at 8.7 percent. The state ranks third nationally in average tech-industry wages, with a typical worker in the field earning $131,000 last year. That nearly doubles the state's average wage.

The data was reported in CompTIA's annual industry analysis, called Cyberstates 2017.
