Medusa brewery planning $5.5 million canning facility

Medusa Brewing Company is planning a $5.5 million canning facility at this site.

Medusa Brewing Co. will develop a $5.5-million canning facility adjacent to its existing taproom in Hudson, which town officials are leveraging to get more redevelopment money from the state.

The planned 15,000-square-foot facility along the Danforth Brook at 1 Houghton St. will feature angled windows, a boardwalk along the brook's edge and outdoor seating for guests.

Because of the Medusa expansion and a separate $5.5-million mixed-use housing development by Charles Randall in downtown, Hudson has asked MassWorks for a $2.5-million grant for downtown improvement projects, according to the application filed by Jack Hunter, director of planning and community development.

The brewery has entered into a purchase-and-sale agreement with the current property owner Alexander Santos and has been working with MassDevelopment to plan for the project. The brewery is in its final stages of securing funding through a local bank, according to the grant application.

The project will create 45 construction jobs, but also six permanent jobs in year one and 20 new jobs by year five.

The brewery hopes to have the project fully permitted by the end of February and plans to begin construction in March. The project is expected to take about a year to complete.

Medusa Brewing Co. opened its taproom in March 2015 and had 30-percent growth each year and has seen more than 30,000 visitors, according to the town application.

"Medusa has been a major contributor to the renaissance now being experienced in Downtown Hudson and has been not only recognized as a destination to anyone in the immediate area but has been acknowledged internationally as one of the finest breweries in the world," the town said in its grant application.

Medusa co-founder Keith Sullivan could not be reached for comment.
