Natick software company MathWorks is opening a second campus in town this week on a former Boston Scientific site off Route 9.

Around 300 workers are on the site Tuesday, but the move-in is actually going to be done in phases. Those first workers, who moved into new buildings on what MathWorks is calling its Lakeside campus, left old Boston Scientific buildings that MathWorks will now knock down. In September, an additional 700 employees will move from the larger Apple Hill Campus just over a mile to the east.

At that point, the Apple Hill campus will have 1,900 workers and the Lakeside campus will have around 1,000.

MathWorks makes technology for everyday products like cellphones and cars, as well as software for banking institutions and classrooms. The 34-year-old company has been among the fastest growing Central Massachusetts companies despite its relatively low profile. As of last year, MathWorks was the seventh-largest Central Massachusetts company by number of employees, with the addition of about 400 employees in just one year.

In total, MathWorks has more than 4,000 workers internationally, including 2,800 in Massachusetts. It has more than 400 additional job openings.

MathWorks' new campus has 513,000 square feet of office space on 31 acres, with amenities including a cafe, dry cleaning, barber shop, a fitness and wellness center and a one-mile walking path. The Apple Hill campus has 1.2 million square feet of office space on 66 acres, with a capacity for 5,000 employees.

The Lakeside campus was home to Boston Scientific until the company relocated its headquarters to Marlborough in 2014.
