Mass. awards first marijuana retail license to Leicester store

Cultivate Holdings, a Leicester-based medical marijuana dispensary, has been awarded the first provisional retail license from the Cannabis Control Commission.

The CCC voted unanimously to approve the license Monday, setting up Worcester County to be the first in the state to have an adult-use store open once a testing facility can be licensed.

Cultivate has been operating a medical dispensary since November, which was also a first for Worcester County.

Cultivate President Sam Barber could not immediately be reached for comment Monday, but told the WBJ last week he’s expecting the dispensary to begin recreational sales later this month.

The company is still waiting for approval for cultivation and production licenses, but Barber said some medical products can be transferred over to the adult-use space.

“We're ready on our end," Barber said. “Hopefully we get word from the state and things keep moving along quickly."

Also awarded licenses was Milford-based Sira Naturals, which received the first ever license from the CCC last month for adult-use cultivation. On Monday, the company was approved for product manufacturing and transportation licenses.
