Timberyard Brewing, which has spent the last year turning an old lumber store into a brewery, is now about set to open.

Timberyard has said on its website it will open on Saturday with a grand opening celebration. The brewery is located at 555 East Main St. (Route 9) in East Brookfield.

The brewery is being opened by co-founders and longtime friends Matt Zarif and T.J. O'Connor, along with investor and advisor Tom Sutter.

Zarif, the head brewer, is described by the brewery as its visionary and driving force. He is a former scientist trained in molecular biology who says he has a passion for experimentation and strong attention to detail to the brewing process.

O'Connor, the general manager, has a background in software engineering and management. He will focus on the non-beermaking aspects of the business, including food and taproom operations, marketing and promotions and the brewery's website.

Sutter is one of the co-founders of Medusa Brewing in Hudson, bringing more than 20 years of business and operational experience to Timberyard.

Timberyard, which participated in the Mass Fermentational beer event in Worcester on Oct. 6, said it will make a variety of styles including India pale ales, farmhouse ales, stouts, pale ales and lagers. It eventually hopes to expand into barrel-aged sours and non-alcoholic beverages including kombucha, soda and seltzer. It has not disclosed its operating hours.

Timberyard took over a former Howe Lumber store just west of the Spencer town line. Howe, a longtime store in town, is now about a mile and a half down Route 9 at 225 W. Main St.
