Sutton entity fined $17K for asbestos work

A Sutton company is being fined nearly $17,000 for violating state Department of Environmental Protection regulations.

Manchaug Trust, which bought the vacant American Legion Post building in Sutton in 2016, was in the process of renovating the space when the company allegedly removed asbestos-containing roofing shingles and insulation from heating system pipes.

Per environmental regulations, a licensed asbestos contractor must perform that work via a state-approved plan to clean up and dispose of all affected parts of the property.

Regulations also requires contractors to notify the state 10 days prior to the asbestos removal work so the state has time to ensure compliance with regulations.
