The Botanist, Worcester's second medical pot store, to open Friday

The Botanist will become Worcester’s second operating medical marijuana dispensary before Christmas.

The location is opening Friday after being approved last month by the state Department of Public Health, which currently regulates the medical use of cannabis.

Parent company Acreage Holdings, based in New York City, announced the opening Wednesday.

The Botanist is the new brand for the company’s nationwide retail footprint and its line of cannabis products. The majority of Acreage’s other medical and adult-use dispensaries in a total of 18 states will either open or rebrand as The Botanist.

The location was previously approved by the state and city for licenses under the Prime Wellness brand.

The store will offer cannabis flower, vape cartridges, edibles, concentrates and tinctures. A family of proprietary Botanist cannabis products is in development and will soon debut at the store, the company said.

Acreage offered journalists a tour of the Worcester facility last month, when General Manager Chris Tolford said the newly branded stores will be geared toward health, education and community.

The dispensary will offer two private consultation rooms for patients to discreetly ask experts about the best products for their specific needs.

“We want patients to feel comfortable accessing treatment and gaining an understanding of the power and applications of cannabis by making the dispensary experience open, welcoming and informative,” Tolford said in a statement Wednesday. “Additionally, in keeping with The Botanist’s commitment to education and a customer experience unlike other cannabis retail stores, we look forward to offering a rich program of education and educational events.”

To mark the opening of the store, veterans who purchase product or merchandise will receive a 25-percent discount through the end of January, the company said.

Acreage plans to open two other Botanist stores in Central Massachusetts in Leominster and Shrewsbury in the coming months.

Recreational cannabis applications for all three locations will be submitted to the Cannabis Control Commission.

The store will be just the second fully licensed medical marijuana dispensary to open in Worcester. Good Chemistry on Harrison Street opened in August.
