An event at Mechanics Hall in Worcester next month will honor four Central Massachusetts people for their heart disease and stroke care work.

The Central Massachusetts Heart and Stroke Ball calls attention to what are the country's first and fifth most common causes of death. Four individuals will be honored with the American Heart Association's Heart of Gold award, which goes to a cardiovascular medical professional, neurology medical professional or community leader who is an advocate in the field.

Dr. Joel Gore, the former chief of the division of cardiovascular medicine at UMass Memorial Medical Center, will be honored with the cardiovascular professional award. Gore's body of work includes more than 350 peer-reviewed publications and mentoring of hundreds of cardiology fellows and faculty at UMass Memorial.

Dr. Gary Keilson will win the neurology professional award. He is the chair of the neurology department at Saint Vincent Hospital, where he has developed the hospital's stroke treatment program. Saint Vincent is the state's first hospital to be certified as an advanced primary stroke center, according to the American Heart Association.

Dr. Abraham Haddad and Linda Haddad are the community winners. Dr. Haddad was the co-chair of the 2012 Central Massachusetts Heart Ball and continues to devote himself to the association's mission. Linda Haddad is a heart attack survivor and longtime volunteer and former nurse at VNA Care.
