Westborough energy efficiency and infrastructure firm NORESCO is making $87 million worth of energy upgrades for three U.S. Navy facilities in Japan under a new contract.

The new project, which NORESCO announced Tuesday, includes a range of upgrades, from new boilers and chillers to more efficient lighting and plumbing fixtures. An estimated 1.5 billion gallons of water are estimated to be saved throughout the roughly 21-year length of the contract, the company said.

The project is a continuation of the firm's work with the Navy in Japan that began in 2008 and has helped the Navy with $190 million in energy cost savings.

NORESCO works with federal, state and local governments agencies, colleges and school districts, hospitals, and other industrial and commercial businesses. The company says it has guaranteed more than $3 billion in energy savings at more than 7,000 sites worldwide.
