Sparx Hockey, the Acton-based inventor of an automated sharpener for hockey and figure skates announced it was selected as the official skate sharpening partner for the National Women's Hockey League.

Sparx Hockey, the Acton-based inventor of an automated sharpener for hockey and figure skates announced it was selected as the official skate sharpening partner for the National Women’s Hockey League, and added a current National Hockey League forward as an investor.

Sparx Hockey is the developer and manufacturer of the Sparx Skate Sharpener, an automated and portable product that allows anyone -- even people with no sharpening experience -- to sharpen their skates with pro-level accuracy. Thomas Vanek, a current forward for the Detroit Red Wings, is onboard as an investor.

The NWHL deal runs through this season, and all four of the league’s franchises will utilize the product at games and practices, according to the league. Financial details were not disclosed.

According to a press release, Sparx Hockey began delivering its product in March of this year after launching a Kickstarter campaign that was fully funded in five days. In 10 months, Sparx has shipped 2,500 skate sharpeners to 49 of the 50 U.S. states, all but two Canadian provinces and territories, and over a dozen NHL and American Hockey League franchises. Expansions to European and Asian markets are currently in planning stages.
