AG Fines Auburn Firm

An Auburn waste disposal company has agreed to pay more than $870,000 as part of a settlement agreement with the commonwealth over alleged violations of the state's wage and hour laws, Attorney General Martha Coakley announced.

Central Mass Disposal will pay most of that - $753,624 - in restitution to 107 affected employees. The remaining is a $120,000 civil penalty that will go to the commonwealth.

Central Mass Disposal did not respond to an email request for comment Thursday afternoon.

An investigation by Coakley's office revealed that the company was providing solid waste and recyclable material collection services to eight communities, including Sterling, Paxton, Millville, Grafton and Auburn. The investigation revealed that the company failed to pay the proper prevailing wage to employees who performed work under the contracts with the eight communities, the attorney general's statement said.

The office noted that the company cooperated fully with the investigation and has agreed to conduct a self-audit for the years 2008 through 2010.

Two other companies that were fined over similar alleged violations also reached agreement. One, Tri State Drywall Systems of Nashua, N.H., has been ordered to pay more than $928,000, part of which is tied to work at sites in Worcester, Fitchburg and Chelmsford.
