Marlborough-based Akoya Biosciences has opened a new facility to assist the company in meeting increased demand for its spatial biology imaging equipment.

The new facility, named the Operations and Manufacturing Center of Excellence, is a 32,000-square-foot facility that includes research and development, manufacturing, quality control, warehouse, and distribution space, according to an Akoya press release issued Monday.

“Spatial biology is transforming drug discovery, translational sciences, and clinical research, and advancing our ability to understand biology, disease progression, and patients’ response to therapy,” Brian McKelligon, CEO of Akoya Biosciences, said in the press release. “We expect our investment in the Manufacturing Center of Excellence will drive operational efficiencies, allowing us to better serve our customers, deliver reagents at increasing scale, and further broaden our portfolio of reagents to unlock new market opportunities.”

The facility will focus primarily on the manufacturing and quality control. Akoya expects the co-location of its research and operational teams to speed up and simplify the testing and delivery of reagents and applications.

Founded in 2015, Akoya became a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq in 2021 following an initial public offering, which raised $151 million

The company is one of several biotechnology manufacturing companies in Marlborough; Cambridge-based Moderna expanded into the city in 2023 and Phio Pharmaceuticals, a company focused on making immune cells more effective in killing tumor cells, is headquartered in Marlborough.
