Area Hospital Execs Join Medical Wireless Coalition

Everyone knows hospitals need medical-grade equipment, electrical connections and plumbing to safely and effectively treat patients. But what about a medical-grade wireless Internet connection?

Two executives from HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster and one from UMass Memorial Medical Center, which are all a part of the UMass health care system, have joined the California-based West Wireless Health Institute, which is dedicated to lowering health care costs through the use of technology.

There is currently no standard approach to installing wireless infrastructure in health care settings, which can result in limited coverage and bandwidth. As more doctors and patients use wireless technology like tablets and smartphones for health care purposes, limited infrastructure can mean the technology is less reliable and useful.

The coalition has developed a framework that enables wireless to be installed in any health care setting. HealthAlliance is one of six hospitals around the country using the framework.
