Baker signs economic development plan

Gov. Charlie Baker hasfollowed through on a requirement of his first year in office and signed the state's economic development plan, which will lay the foundation for the administration's legislative initiatives.

The "Opportunities for All" plan "will build equity by creating economic opportunities, economic prosperity, and economic mobility in communities across the commonwealth" and will "deepen the state’s many existing areas of strength, and confront its weaknesses head-on," Baker wrote in an introduction to the roughly 40-page document.

"This economic development plan is an important statement of our administration’s priorities and values," Baker said in a statement. "It creates a framework for connecting residents across the state to economic opportunity, and for unlocking new business growth by pressing Massachusetts’ competitive advantage on a number of fronts."

The Baker administration has said its plan, which got the unanimous backing of the Governor’s Economic Development Planning Council this month, was assembled after "thousands of conversations" with business groups and economic experts, meetings with 67 legislators, more than a dozen listening sessions, and feedback gathered during visits to 110 cities and towns this year.

Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Jay Ash's secretariat will use the plan's policy framework to "to develop and shape specific initiatives that will respond to issues, themes, and priorities highlighted in this plan," according to the administration.
