Brown Won’t Run For Senate

Former senator Scott Brown said he will not be a candidate in the special election to replace John Kerry in the U.S. Senate.

The Republican, who lost his bid for reelection in November to Democrat Elizabeth Warren, said in a statement Friday that after giving “serious thought” about another run, “I was not at all certain that a third Senate campaign in less than four years, and the prospect of returning to a Congress even more partisan than the one I left, was really the best way for me to continue in public service.”

Brown’s announcement leaves the Republicans without a declared candidate for the June 25 special election. U.S. Reps. Edward Markey of Malden and Stephen Lynch of South Boston have announced their candidates for the Democratic nomination. They will face off in an April primary.

Earlier this week, Gov. Deval Patrick named former top aide William “Mo” Cowan to replace Kerry on an interim basis until the special election.

Kerry, who served in the Senate for 28 years, is stepping down effective Friday to become secretary of state, replacing Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In an upset, Brown won a special election in January 2010 to finish the unexpired term of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy, who died in August 2009.
