Central Mass. brewery, restaurants on the move

The dining and drinking landscape of Worcester County is on the rise with a well-regarded brewery coming to the region and two new restaurants set to open in the next few days.

The biggest move coming to the area, in terms of sheer size, is being made by Monson-based Tree House Brewery, which recently announced a new 45,000-square-foot location that will open sometime in early 2017. While brewery co-founder Dean Rohn was tight-lipped on the exact address, he said that the 70 acres that come along with the facility will provide more than enough space for future expansion. Moving to more centralized location will help the brewery expand its reach across the region, he said.

“The location is almost 100 percent the reason we even thought about the property,” said Rohn, who also said the company has been looking for a new location almost since opening their Monson location in 2015. “It is centrally located to I-90 and the 84 exchange. It is the center of the northeast universe.”

In fact, keeping a lid on the new location has been a huge effort for everyone involved with Tree House, he said, explaining that the brewery staff was all brought to the property for the Christmas office party and has had to remain mum about the move.

“We took 40 to 50 of them up to the land and introduced them to the new Tree House,” he said. “We are all just really excited about it.”

Not only will the new location offer additional access to Tree House's beers, which have been touted as some of the best by organizations such as Beer Advocate, but it will also allow the company to greatly increase production.

There is also restaurant news in Worcester. The Canal District will see two restaurants open within the next week. Whiskey on Water, located on Water Street, will open Friday. The restaurant located at the former site of Jose Murphy’s will feature over 400 whiskeys and a unique food ordering system. Customers will order food through a smartphone app at their table, which will then be cooked by a collection of rotating food trucks nearby. The food is then delivered tableside.

In other restaurant news, the Hangover Pub on Green Street will also open on St. Patrick’s Day. This pub will feature house-cured bacon liberally spread throughout their various meals in addition to a full bar, according to MassLive.
