Central Mass. communities get loan forgiveness for infrastructure projects

Fitchburg, Worcester and Webster are among cities and towns receiving principal forgiveness grants for water infrastructure loans from the Massachusetts Water Pollution Abatement Trust (MWPAT), which is expected to free up capital for other city infrastructure improvements.

Fitchburg received $312,691 and Worcester receive $29,481 in loan forgiveness for clean water infrastructure projects, and Webster received $72,148 in forgiveness for drinking water projects, according to a statement issued by State Treasurer Steven Grossman’s office Wednesday. The federally funded grants are administered by the state, and are awarded through a competitive process to communities in most need of financial assistance.

“The cities and towns benefitting from this latest round of grants often encounter financial challenges when building and maintaining water infrastructure, and this funding will help them redirect scarce resources to other local priorities such as roads and bridges, public safety and education,” Grossman said in a statement.

More than $5.27 million was awarded in the latest round of grants. According to Grossman’s office, recipients will see monthly loan payments reduced, which will free up money for other infrastructure projects.
